Why Squid Game is Netflix’s biggest hit

Squid Game is the latest series on Netflix based on South Korea’s debt crisis was released on September 17, 2021. This is a nine-episode Korean thriller that could be the streaming service’s best non-English show in the world.

The Squid Game is about a group of adults indebted and desperate to make money. They then find themselves in a competition where they are required to play children’s games in order to win approximately  33 million or US$38 million. The Catch? If they lose they die!

Seong Gi-hun is a divorced chauffeur who is deeply indebted. He then accepted an offer to go to an undisclosed location where he finds himself among 455 players to play games to win the money. The players are kept under lock and key by armed guards in pink suits with games overseen by the Front Man. Gi-hun then allies with other players, including his childhood friend Cho Sang-woo, to try to survive the physical and psychological twists of the games

According to reviews, it is so rare to find a movie or series that isn’t based on a book, movie, or comic book. The movie also appeals to every demographic and is very relatable on how far people can go just to make money.

The only negative feedback about the show was that the translations were not perfect but translation is an art and it cannot always be perfect I suppose.

The creator of the show  Hwang Dong-hyuk wrote the script of the movie several years ago but was rejected by a number of studios until he found Netflix in 2019. He wrote and directed all the episodes himself.
